A defibrillator is now part of Steinmühlen’s equipment

Archive, News

Effective immediately, Steinmühle now has a defibrillator for use in cardiac emergencies. “This has expanded the medical equipment available to the approximately 30 colleagues at our school who are certified as first responders,” reports Bernd Holly (right) on behalf of the school administration team. A defibrillator (“defib”) uses targeted electrical shocks to treat cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation, which is often fatal if not treated promptly. The defibrillator, which is stored near the teachers’ lounge, was funded by the Steinmühlen Friends Association. Chairwoman Jasmine Weidenbach (center) presented the device, valued at 1,300 euros, in the presence of board member Christian Finance (left), who is also a member of the teaching staff.

Strong teamwork, unwavering focus: Basketball team qualifies for regional finals

Archive, News

That was awesome! The Steinmühle team returned from the tournament at the sports hall at Georg-Gassmann Stadium with a first-place finish in the district basketball finals as part of the “Youth Trains for the Olympics” competition (Competition Class II, boys).

“It was clear from the start that the tournament would be decided by the first two games,” says Marc Bepperling, one of the two coaches. Based on their performances in recent years, the Elisabethschule and the Gymnasium Philippinum were considered the favorites.

With a victory over an injury-plagued Elisabethschule team, the Steinmühle team got off to a strong start in the tournament. Despite a two-hour break after their first victory, the Steinmühle team carried that winning momentum into their second game against the Philippinum. After taking an early 6–0 lead, the team managed to maintain that momentum and left the field victorious.

According to Marc Bepperling, the biggest hurdles were successfully overcome thanks to strong teamwork and excellent individual performances.

Despite facing unexpectedly strong opponents from the Gladenbach Europaschule, the third game still came down to the wire in the end. With great tenacity and unwavering focus, Steinmühle also defeated the Mittelpunktschule Hartenrod in the final game.

According to school sports coordinator Michael Neirich, Steinmühle has thus qualified for the regional finals on December 13 in Marburg.

Players: Eric Behrens, Linus Ingenbleek, Sebastian Jung, Jonas Neirich, Samuel Ruff, Hannes Schweitzer, Finn Steinfeld.

Coaches: Gordian Bachmann, Marc Bepperling.

The results:

Game 1: Steinmühle – Elisabethschule (20 : 13)

Game 2: Steinmühle – Gymnasium Philippinum (20 : 16)

Game 3: Steinmühle vs. Europaschule Gladenbach (20–17)

Game 4: Steinmühle vs. Mittelpunktschule Hartenrod (30 : 11)

Alcohol and Addiction Prevention Project: “Drunk Goggles” Simulate the Effects of Being Drunk

Archive, News

The subtitle of the alcohol prevention project made it clear what it was all about: “Drunk as a skunk—you’re better off without it.” Don’t just drink because everyone else is—and certainly don’t overdo it: To raise awareness about responsible and moderate alcohol consumption and to highlight the dangers of abuse, the “Alcohol and Addiction” project for 8th graders, led by Nicole Hohm and Heike Rabben-Martin, was launched.

Workshop with Dr. Birgit Wollenberg, M.D.

Since this topic is part of the State Medical Association’s program, participants once again received first-hand medical information. Dr. Birgit Wollenberg, who has been director of the Public Health Department for two years, led the workshop at the Steinmühle for the fourth time. She discussed the effects of alcohol, the damage it can cause with excessive and prolonged use, the long-term health consequences of getting completely drunk, and the risks of addiction. The goal is to promote a “healthy” approach to alcohol through moderate consumption within one’s own limits, as well as the ability to simply say “no” and not give in to peer pressure to drink along with others.

Using so-called “drunk goggles,” which are designed to simulate a blood alcohol concentration of 1.3 per mille, all participants were able to get a sense of what it’s like to drive while under the influence and have to handle everyday tasks in that state, such as picking up objects.

Halloween Party

Archive, News

On the evening before Reformation Day, we took advantage of the witching hour to throw a little Halloween party.

Amid terrifying clowns and ghostly girls, there were ice-cold little hands in the punch and gelatin worms in the cake. Even the teaching staff had transformed into a sort of “Suicide Squad.” Fortunately, though, the team didn’t have to defeat any invincible monsters—just keep an eye on the students.

An event worth repeating.

Fundraiser for the New Building: Hörtheatrale Brings the Mystery Play “Das gefleckte Band” to the Steinmühle

Archive, News

In conjunction with the mystery project that the 7th-grade students are currently working on in their project-based classes under the guidance of Melisande Lauginiger, Steinmühle and the Friends of Steinmühle were able to secure the participation of Daniel Sempf, an actor employed at the Marburg Schauspielhaus, along with Franziska Knetsch and Stefan Gille. On December 5 at 7 p.m. in the Steinmühle Forum, they will present their “audio theater” performance of the crime play “Das gefleckte Band.” The evening is part of a series of benefit events to raise funds for the interior design of the new Steinmühle building currently under construction.

Theater Meets Radio Drama

The Hörtheatrale has become a very popular and well-attended institution in Marburg when it comes to crime radio plays. In a captivating performance, three actors from Marburg will present Arthur Conan Doyle’s crime story “The Speckled Band” in the form of an audio play. The event will begin with a mystery story reading by a 7th-grade student. This story was written as part of the school’s mystery writing project and reveals great literary talent.

The evening promises to be exciting

The introduction of the characters is sure to have you guessing. With his pipe, a crackling fire, tea, and his faithful friend Dr. Watson, the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes sets out to shed light on the mystery. In the famous mystery “The Speckled Band,” Sherlock Holmes and John Watson investigate on behalf of Helen Stoner to solve the mysterious death of her sister—and to protect her from impending danger. Just as her sister did back then—who died under mysterious circumstances—Helen Stoner is also robbed of her sleep at night by an eerie, faint whistling sound. When the distraught woman, who had sought out Holmes in sheer terror, goes on to report that her sister had stammered the words “The Spotted Ribbon” and that a burnt-out match had been found in her hand, Sherlock Holmes knows that he has a case to solve at the old Stoke Moran estate—one that will also put both detectives in grave danger.

Donations for Interior Design

Since the event is organized as a fundraiser, admission is free for visitors. The Steinmühle welcomes donations, which will benefit the “Interior Design of the New Building” project. The event runs until 9 p.m. There will be an intermission.

To help us plan better, we ask that you reserve a ticket in advance. Tickets are now available at the Steinmühle office; please call 06421-40820.

Class 6b is running for the title of “Germany’s Best Class”

Archive, News

Class 6b at Steinmühle wants to become “Germany’s Best Class (2018)” and is applying to participate in the quiz show of the same name on the Kinderkanal (https://www.kika.de/die-beste-klasse-deutschlands/index.html).

Sixth- and seventh-grade classes are eligible to participate if they submit the required materials to the station by November 9. Entries can take the form of a video, for example, which is what Class 6b decided to do.

Under the guidance of their homeroom teacher, Nicole Faß, the class has been planning this video practically since the beginning of the school year, initially focusing their efforts on class council meetings. A “directing team” formed afterward then wrote a script based on the ideas gathered from the class. Among other things, the students found the experience they gained from the radio play project at the end of 5th grade helpful, since they had also had to write a script for the recordings there.

With the generous support of art teacher Ines Vielhaben, the first scenes have now been filmed: classroom clips, sports scenes, outdoor scenes, and introductions of the students. Additional scenes were filmed in collaboration with Mr. Bonn, the uncle of one of the students, who works in this field and has also agreed to edit the application video for the class.

The girls and boys in Class 6b are really enjoying the project. In addition to the title “Best Class in Germany,” the competition offers a class trip to Scotland as a prize.

SV Designs Visionary “Steinmühle 2025” Wall for In-School Teacher Professional Development

Archive, News

Over the past few weeks, the students of the Steinmühlen Student Council have presented their plan to all homeroom teachers: to design a “Visionary Wall 2025” for the school’s internal teacher training (SchiLf) on November 20 and 21. A form with guiding questions served as the basis for the students’ feedback on the content; the answers were collected through the respective class councils. The student council has now reviewed and evaluated the responses together with guidance teacher Dirk Lange. In the next step, the two student body presidents will use the feedback to create a short PowerPoint presentation with the results, which they will then present during the SchiLf session.

Students at Steinmühlen School Raise 3,424.24 Euros for an Orphanage in Haiti

Archive, News

Class 9b, led by homeroom teacher Dr. Rainer Nietzke, is involved in a sustainable aid project

On January 12, 2010, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale devastated the island nation of Haiti. Since then, Steinmühle has regularly supported the organization Haiticare and most recently donated 3,424.24 euros—funds raised through various fundraising activities organized by Class 9b.

The initiative was launched by a student from Marburg who, in January 2010, served as a first responder immediately after the earthquake in Haiti and approached Steinmühle School Principal Bernd Holly with a request for support. That very same day—following a lecture by the internationally renowned educator Jesper Juul at Steinmühle—Holly asked the numerous attendees for donations. It marked the beginning of long-term support for a special aid project.

316,000 people died in the natural disaster. Another 310,000 were seriously injured, and 1.85 million people lost their homes. The damage is estimated at the equivalent of about 5.4 billion euros. Thousands of people are still living in temporary shelters today.

Student involvement has raised over 20,000 euros so far

To date, students at Steinmühle High School have raised a total of more than 20,000 euros to support this impressive project in a slum in Port-au-Prince, the capital of the impoverished Caribbean nation. And time and again since 2010, students at Steinmühle High School have volunteered to collect donations for Haiticare. This includes the current 9th-grade class, which raised awareness of the plight in Haiti through various activities and also set up an information booth in Marburg’s Oberstadt to solicit donations.

Class 9b, led by their homeroom teacher Dr. Rainer Nietzke, has been particularly active. The students didn’t just bake waffles and sell them for donations. Another major source of revenue was live music by the class band “Carrrla,” which played well-known pop songs.

HaitiCare is a small German aid organization run by volunteers, ensuring that 100 percent of donations actually reach the children in Haiti. The registered association HaitiCare focuses its aid efforts on the country’s youth—its future. Donations go toward an orphanage, a Montessori kindergarten, a Montessori preschool, and a Montessori school, as well as learning materials and classroom equipment such as shelves and tables. Investments are made in the education of young people, with programs ranging from skilled trades to agriculture and IT professions. This has created—and continues to create—paid and secure jobs.

A close call, but well-deserved: Team “Delta” won the Steinmühlen soccer tournament

Archive, News

For this year’s Steinmühlen soccer tournament, held according to the tried-and-true format, the six participating teams gathered at the Cappeler Sports Hall. Teams from the school (grades 8–12 and teachers) and the boarding school (students and counselors) competed. Team composition was determined by a draw.
In a friendly, competitive, and fair atmosphere, the matches were played at the highest technical level, reported organizer Michael Neirich. Spectators were treated to many beautifully crafted goals and some impressive technical feats.
In the end, the tournament schedule had it that Team “Delta”—consisting of Sebastian Grunewald, Jannis Borsdorf, Nils Rupp, Bastian Sasse, Dejan Boguslawski, Lars Flühe, and Finn Weckmüller, would face off against “Die Raketen” (Michael Hermens, Hannibal, Laurens Hamann, Habib, Paul Wolf, Ahmad, and Jamal) for the tournament title in the final match. In a high-caliber and closely contested match, Team “Delta” ultimately prevailed by a narrow 2–1 margin, becoming the well-deserved tournament champions. The team had managed to win several high-scoring matches throughout the afternoon.
