Steinmühlen’s women’s soccer team won bronze at the Hesse championship in Frankfurt

Contests & Awards, News, Sports & Health, Talent Development

Podium finish at the Hesse Championships for the Steinmühlen women’s soccer team in Competition Class III: After winning the regional round of the “Youth Training for the Olympics” competition, the team led by Coach Lothar Potthof took home the bronze medal in Frankfurt, making them the third-best women’s soccer team in Hesse in their division.

At the regional tournament, they had three wins against Taunusschule, Gesamtschule Schlitzerland, and FvSS Wetzlar—along with two ties against IGS Busecker Tal and Gymnasium Oberursel, which had won the state championship two years ago. As always, our team played with great dedication and shone thanks to a cohesive team effort. Full of hope and enthusiasm, our players then set off for Frankfurt to compete in the Hesse finals.
At first, things were looking pretty good—despite the pouring rain, our women’s soccer team made it to the semifinals. Perhaps, in the end, they were too cautious and nervous. An unfortunate back pass ultimately led to a 0–1 loss to the team from Offenbach.
Your performances were still fantastic, girls! We want to say a huge thank you—both to our female soccer players for their dedication to the sport and to Lothar Potthoff for his great commitment. We’re already looking forward to seeing more from you! Keep up the great work!

Friends of the School Association Supports More Physical Activity During Recess

Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Sports & Health

A beach volleyball court and two table tennis tables have recently been installed between the Forum and the Atrium. These and other sports equipment are intended to encourage middle school students to be more active during breaks—an initiative of the School Parents’ Council (SEB) that the Friends of the School Association, chaired by Jasmine Weidenbach, was happy to support with 6,800 euros. The new sports facility was officially opened on May 17 with a ceremony organized by the school’s athletic director, Marcel Kalb. The students immediately thought the new sports facilities were really cool and needed no encouragement to try them out right away. It goes without saying that the SEB, the Friends of the School Association, the teachers, and the school administration were all very pleased with this development.

The gig quadruple sculls got off to a flying start

News, Rowing, Sports & Health, Talent Development

A great success for our Steinmühlen girls’ gig quadruple sculls at “Youth Trains for the Olympics” in Competition Class III: In their very first regatta together, the team immediately put in a strong performance, reported coach Martin “Stromi” Strohmenger. Despite a valiant effort, the athletes unfortunately fell short of second place, which would have secured them a spot in the finals. Nevertheless, the five are eager for more and already have their sights set on next year. This could also mean more reinforcements from the younger age groups. Our photo shows the successful and dedicated rowers (from left): Madlena Preck, coxswain Lilu Schmidt, Emilia Taschner, Noomi Schneider, and Anna Lisa Wilhelm.

Fun Takes Center Stage: Steinmühle Has the Largest Contingent at the Marburg Night Marathon

Contests & Awards, Former Students & Alumni, Life at Boarding School, News, Sports & Health

With nine relay teams, three half-marathon runners (Leon Vielhaben, Ron Owen, and Clara Freudenstein), and one marathon runner (Marlon Welsch), Steinmühle was once again the largest group of runners at this year’s Marburg Night Marathon.

The groups were diverse, meaning they were mixed in terms of running ability and not focused on achieving particularly high rankings. Fun and camaraderie were once again the main priorities this year, reported Principal Björn Gemmer, who successfully participated in the race. His group secured the top spot among those who finished. The fact that this particular group didn’t have a name—and that this was even noted on the certificate—was a minor source of amusement.

The following photos, showing all participants, depict—in no particular order—those who started the Marburg Night Marathon at the Steinmühle.

Have fun scrolling!

Surfing Trip for the Advanced Sports Class

News, Sports & Health, Steinmühle on the Road

A week of summer, sun, and surfing. That already sounds like vacation, doesn’t it!? But it wasn’t quite time for that yet… For the 12th-grade advanced sports class, however, it was already a reality—they went on a field trip! Early Saturday morning, they hopped on the TGV headed for the popular surfing town of Carcans-Plage in southern France.

After a long trip, we kicked off the evening by watching the soccer round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark at a local restaurant. The initially bad weather was more than made up for by the great atmosphere and joy over Germany’s victory.

The next day, feeling refreshed and well-rested, we set out for our first day of surfing. For some, it was their first time on a surfboard; others had already moved beyond the beginner stage and were giving their skills a thorough refresher. The great weather and excellent conditions sparked a love of surfing in most of us and allowed us to enjoy the rest of the day at the beach.

Surfing the “green waves”

The following surfing sessions led to more and more success, and we realized that with the right technique and a few tricks, you can make rapid progress. In the evenings, we sat together on the beach, built bonfires, and enjoyed the sunset on Carcans Plage. With our experienced surf instructor Tim, the bravest among us ventured out to ride the taller “green” waves, while others honed their basic skills in the “whitewater.” We also strengthened our class bond and spent a lot of time together through our group Spikeball, volleyball, and soccer tournaments.

Even though the trip was coming to an end at an ever-faster pace, our schedule was still packed. On the last evening, the sports class passionately cheered on our German national soccer team, wearing Germany jerseys and waving flags. The entire restaurant was filled with the spirit of Germany, and emotions ran high. The frustration and sadness over our national team’s elimination from the European Championship briefly dampened the mood, but it couldn’t take away the wonderful memories of a fantastic week of surfing!

Steinmühle is officially the “State Training Center for Para Rowing”

Collaborations & Partnerships, News, Sports & Health, Talent Development

The Hessian Association for Sports for People with Disabilities and Rehabilitation (HBRS) took advantage of the Steinmühle’s major sports festival on Friday, June 28, and the presence of its sports partners at the event to officially designate Steinmühle as a “State Training Center for Para Rowing.” HBRS President Heinz Wagner presented the official award in front of the Steinmühle boathouse to rowing instructor and coach Martin Strohmenger, who had been instrumental in driving this development forward with the support and backing of Steinmühle Managing Director Dirk Konnertz (in the background). The plaque now complements the existing sign reading “Steinmühle Inclusive Water Sports Center,” which was officially unveiled exactly one year ago at the summer festival of the “Rudern und Sport Steinmühle” club. Both of Steinmühle’s designations are closely linked to its partner, blista, the German Institute for the Blind in Marburg. For years now, inclusive rowing involving sighted and visually impaired rowers has been a vibrant and successful program. Their joint inclusive water sports program also includes canoeing. Other sports for people with physical disabilities are offered jointly as well. On the same day, blista received the official designation “State Training Center for Goalball, Para Judo, and Blind Soccer” from the HBRS president.

Together with several visually impaired and sighted athletes, Steinmühle, blista, and guests celebrated the awards and paid tribute to them: blista Board Member Patrick Temmesfeld, City Councilwoman and Head of the Sports Department Kirsten Dinnebier, Björn Backes, head of the City of Marburg’s Sports Department, blista Principal Peter Audretsch, Steinmühle Principal Björn Gemmer, Michael Neirich, rowing coordinator at Steinmühle, Janosch Briel, sports coordinator at blista; and Claus Duncker, finance director of RuS Steinmühle and former blista board member.

School Record on the High School Graduation Exam

News, Sports & Health

Great news from this year’s practical high school graduation exam in track and field: Benjamin Schul (center) set a new school record in the high jump with a leap of 1.85 meters. “He jumped higher than most of us—and he’s not even a track and field athlete,” reported Marcel Kalb, head of school sports. Hats off to you, Benjamin. That sets a new standard for Steinmühle!

Activity at the Steinmühle During the National Youth Games and Sports Day

News, Sports & Health

Some enjoy competing, while others see it more as an opportunity to try out a sport. The Federal Youth Games and the Steinmühle Sports Day were perfect for all of this. As is tradition, most of the activities took place at the Georg Gassmann Stadium. The facilities and weather provided ideal conditions, making the sporting events an active and enjoyable break from the school routine. Both individual and team sports were on the agenda, and medals and certificates were awarded. School athletic director Marcel Kalb was able to count on reliable support from the faculty for the organization and execution of the events and shared various photos. — Thank you very much for these snapshots!

Steinmühlen rower Marc Weber won a silver medal at the World Cup

Contests & Awards, News, Rowing, Sports & Health, Talent Development

Congratulations on their podium finish: Marc Weber (RuS Steinmühle Marburg) and Jonas Gelsen (RC Nassovia Höchst) won the silver medal in the doubles event at the final World Cup before the Olympic Games in Poznan, Poland! In a thrilling race, the German duo demonstrated their outstanding skills against a world-class field.

In the race, Marc and his rowing partner clocked a time of 6:27.72 minutes, securing second place behind the Irish team, which took first place with a time of 6:25.28 minutes. The New Zealand team followed closely behind with a time of 6:28.41.

Winning the silver medal is a major achievement for “our” two guys and gives them a huge boost of motivation for the upcoming Olympic Games. The duo is officially competing this season under the name “Lottozweier,” as Lotto Hessen is so convinced of the athletes’ rowing abilities that the company has joined their ranks of supporters as part of a sponsorship agreement.
