On the Last Day of School: Steinmühle Honors Students

,

A great way to wrap up the 2014–15 school year: On the last day of school, before report cards were handed out, the student body gathered in the Forum to “celebrate” their classmates who had achieved outstanding accomplishments outside of the classroom.

Well over one hundred school certificates were awarded for achievements in school competitions, for outstanding commitment in social, political, and cultural areas, and for exceptional athletic achievements.

It’s hard to single out anything in particular, but here are a few examples:

  • The achievements of Jan Audretsch, Caroline Mauersberger and other students in the math competitions,
  • the championship title for Julius Guthmann at the German and Hessian Kung Fu Championships,
  • the school’s rowing and soccer teams from the school, which made it to the Hesse finals and performed well there,
  • the decathlon performances by Julius Grau, who qualified for the “German Championships” with his 6,225 points,
  • the reliability and the dedication of the Steinmühlen Catering Service,
  • the award for Naomi Skibbe for her essay “Checkmate,”
  • that social commitment of Merle Skrzypek (refugee support), Rebecca Verweyen (Youth Center), Lasse Jacob (Retirement Home), Sören Nau (CISV Peace Camp),
  • the exceptionally strong performance of 24 female students in DELF and Cambridge language certificates,
  • Leon Döringer’s many talents, who not only excels as a soccer player and student council president and has achieved the C1 level on the Cambridge scale, but also coaches a youth soccer team
  • and, and, and …

Mr. Gemmer and Ms. Fries , together with the student council presidents Leon Döringer and Finn Busmann to organize a student awards ceremony that had everything that makes such an event special: sincere recognition of dedication and achievement.

The AG Band with Talea Funk, the WU Film , and Christian Eifert and Alissa Thomas were there. It went completely silent when Bodam Lee coaxed incredible sounds from her violin.

And another factor that contributed to this was the behavior of the student audience, who paid tribute to the honorees and audibly shared in their joy, creating the impression that “WE ARE STEINMÜHLE.”
