Sports & Health at the Steinmühle

Promote healthy physical, emotional, and intellectual personal development

On its spacious grounds, the Steinmühle offers a wide and varied range of opportunities for a wide variety of sports activities. Balanced physical and sensory experiences support the healthy physical, emotional, and intellectual development of our students. This is closely linked to the development of a positive self-concept as well as emotional and social stability.

At Steinmühle, the promotion of sports and physical activity is not viewed as competing with other areas of activity, but rather as a supportive and complementary part of a holistic education.

Rowing is a quarterly focus in physical education classes for 7th graders. On 7th-grade Sports Day, the traditional rowing event takes place at the school’s own boathouse. Toward the end of 7th grade, a multi-day rowing trip to Lake Eder is on the calendar. Young people with a passion for rowing can choose the sports track in high school and select rowing as part of the advanced sports course. At the nearby club Rudern und Sport Steinmühle (www.rudern.steinmuehle.de), students can train alongside their schoolwork—depending on their interest and ambition—for regattas and even at the elite level.

Making Friends with the Ponies – Getting Up Close and Personal with the Horses

Children can begin their first experiences with horses at Steinmühle as early as elementary school. For interested students at the Bilingual Elementary School, an after-school club focused on horseback riding is offered on Fridays after school.

In grades 5 and 6, students have the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular club on Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

The course covers important basics about horses. This helps participants learn how to handle the animals safely:

  • What should you keep in mind when working with horses?
  • How are they kept, and what do they eat?
  • What does care involve?
  • How do you get on a horse?
  • …and much more

Before beginning the riding program, it is important to acquire some basic knowledge that will make the joy of riding, success, and fun possible in the first place.
To ensure this happens, experienced club leaders are available to the children at the Steinmühle Riding School, which is led by Beate Schridde (Level A Instructor). They gently and properly introduce the girls and boys to horseback riding.

In cooperation with the agency Play the Pro, Steinmühle offers a professional tennis program for all grade levels on campus, from 1st to 13th grade. Three courts can be used simultaneously. The program is designed for both beginners and athletes who already compete in tournaments.
The program is primarily aimed at Steinmühle students, who no longer have to travel long distances to play tennis after school. Training times are therefore primarily scheduled for the afternoon. However, morning sessions are also offered to accommodate parents’ schedules.
Tennis camps are also available.
Information about the full range of programs can be found here: https://www.play-the-pro.com/steinm%C3%BChle-schule-internat/.
