A Solid Cultural Education at the Steinmühle
A key concern
For many years, one of Steinmühle’s central goals has been to offer our students the opportunity to receive a well-rounded cultural education.
The range of programs in this area has therefore been steadily expanded in recent years and, in addition to the familiar school subjects of art, music, drama, and choir, as well as projects such as the 7th-grade theater club—introduced in 2008 and run in collaboration with the Hessian State Theater—and the musical projects for 5th and 6th grades.
Through various regular cultural school events, our students can showcase their talents and (acquired) skills to a wider audience, gaining valuable experience in performing in front of an audience.
Music at the Steinmühle
In grades 5 and 6, students have the opportunity to learn to play wind instruments as part of their music classes. Participation in the wind instrument class is voluntary. Instrument assignments are made by the wind instrument class teacher after students have indicated their instrument preferences (first, second, and third choices).
The wind ensemble for grades 5 and 6 lays the foundation for students to further develop their skills in the various musical groups at Steinmühle (choir, StoneMill Houseband, and other ensembles). Over time, the young artists showcase their progress at several school events.
The musical projects put on by the 5th and 6th-grade classes are among the school’s regular cultural events, during which the students showcase their talents and newly acquired skills to a wider audience.
The main goal of the 5th-grade choir is to instill a love of singing. The program begins with unison songs in various styles and canons, before moving on to preparations for a musical in the second semester.
The Upper School Choir brings together the powerful voices of 120 students in grades 11–13. In addition to the Steinmühlen Revue, it enriches numerous other events.
At the Steinmühle Bilingual Elementary School, students in grades 3 and 4 play various instruments as beginners in the Elementary School Band Club.
At the Steinmühle boarding school, young people play various instruments on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m., even if they have no prior experience.
Olaf Roth directs both bands. In some cases, there is collaboration with the Marburg Music School.
Even for experienced instrumentalists
As part of the extracurricular activities program, students in grades 5 and 6 have the option to join the “Band” class. This is suitable for both beginners and students with prior experience.
From 7th grade through 13th grade, interested students can play music in the StoneMill House Band, which includes students from all grade levels. The band meets on Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The focus is on collaborative teamwork and developing an annual program during a rehearsal weekend in Wolfshausen near Marburg, where members work together to select songs and create arrangements.
In 2013, the StoneMill House Band gave rise to a smaller jazz ensemble, which rehearses on Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m.
A small musical band is also formed each year for the second half of the school year. It accompanies the annual musical performed by the 5th-grade classes before summer break.
In addition to these bands led by Frank Wemme, duos and bands frequently form at the Steinmühle through the initiative of young musicians.
All of the bands listed here, starting with the Elementary School Band Club, have the opportunity each spring at “Bands on Stage” to showcase their talents professionally during a diverse evening of music. The contact person for Bands on Stage is Frank Wemme.
Other performances include the Fall Festival in September and the end-of-year celebration in December.
Dramatic Play
Drama (DS) is a theater course offered in high school. Students—some of whom already have several years of experience—work with their teacher to decide on a project and then develop a production at a more advanced level, which is subsequently performed in front of an audience.
In addition to the practical work on the collaborative project, Performing Arts includes a theoretical component in which, for example, questions raised by the practical work are explored with the help of theoretical texts.
Another area fostered by theater work is personal development. This includes, for example, dealing with criticism and working as part of a team.
Culture Mill
The Kulturmühle at Steinmühle High School offers students an online platform—accessible through a section of the school’s own organizational app, “StoneApp”—where they can showcase their creative projects and work. It doesn’t matter whether these were created in class or outside of school. All faculty members are also warmly invited to publish their own successful contributions there.
