Tenth-graders visit an exhibition about Marburg\u2019s sister city, Moshi, with their teacher, Mar\u00eda Ramos <\/strong><\/p>\n

On June 12, Mar\u00eda Ramos and the students from Steinm\u00fchle\u2014who had spent eight weeks in Tanzania earlier this year\u2014visited the photo exhibition on Moshi at Galerie Haspelstra\u00dfe eins.<\/p>\n

Seeing these familiar images stirred up emotions that led to comments such as \u201cRecognition, familiarity, nostalgia\u2014that\u2019s just Tanzania.\u201d Viewing the exhibits gave them an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences. <\/p>\n

The students talk about the projects they took part in at the One World School Kilimanjaro. They had been staying there\u2014at Steinm\u00fchle\u2019s partner school\u2014during their time there. Now they\u2019re experts on German-Tanzanian history, with a focus on colonization. <\/p>\n

Every project should culminate in a creative product. Whether skulls made of clay or African masks, or fossil reproductions\u2014everything should also serve as inspiration for other schools, for the Tanzanian audience and listeners of these presentations\u2014but also for German politicians such as Deputy Foreign Minister Katja Keul, who was currently paying an official visit to Tanzania. <\/p>\n

During a reflection session held in conjunction with the exhibition, the students shared what they had brought back to Germany from Tanzania in their \u201csuitcases\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou learn to be grateful, even though the experience was also wonderful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

“I’ve discovered something new about myself\u2014just how adaptable I am.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“I now have a realistic picture of Africa that isn’t portrayed in the media.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“We have too many things; material possessions aren’t that important.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Spending the day without media wasn’t bad at all; on the contrary, we talked so much with each other.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“It was an adjustment, a challenge, but the experience was worth it.”<\/em><\/p>\n

These were the words of our participants, all of whom grew a little through this experience.<\/p>\n

We look forward to welcoming new generations of students who would also like to have this experience so they can return with \u201ca suitcase full of memories.\u201d Future 10th graders interested in a trip to Tanzania should contact Mar\u00eda Ramos or Principal Bj\u00f6rn Gemmer. <\/p>\n
