{"id":46153,"date":"2021-10-25T21:45:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T19:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.steinmuehle.de\/blog\/2021\/10\/25\/steinmuehle-boarding-school-rolls-up-its-sleeves-helping-hands-in-the-ahr-valley\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T17:35:04","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T15:35:04","slug":"steinmuehle-boarding-school-rolls-up-its-sleeves-helping-hands-in-the-ahr-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/steinmuehle.de\/en\/blog\/2021\/10\/25\/steinmuehle-boarding-school-rolls-up-its-sleeves-helping-hands-in-the-ahr-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Steinm\u00fchle Boarding School Rolls Up Its Sleeves: Helping Hands in the Ahr Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six students, accompanied by two teachers, traveled to the Ahr Valley\u2014which remains severely devastated\u2014on the Saturday before the fall break with the help of the organization \u201cHelfer Shuttle\u201d to provide volunteer assistance there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get to work with a jackhammer, a mask, and work boots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our eight-member delegation was commissioned by a resident of Bad Neuenahr in Ahrweiler, whose house and garden had been ravaged and largely destroyed by the summer floods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of work to be done here,\u201d says our educator Phillip Rumpel, \u201cbut at least we\u2019ve been able to bring some order to things, and that gives us hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23339 size-featured_large\" src=\"https:\/\/steinmuehle.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/09\/891acc9b-7e84-4a3b-8d8a-710102b84cf3-1440x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"630\"><\/p>\n<p>Working together, the students scraped the plaster off the wall and helped clear away the piles of debris in front of the house. There was also plenty to do in the resident\u2019s yard: a tree had to be cut down, the flower beds were cleared of mud, and the paving stones, which had been scattered haphazardly, were stacked on a pallet. <\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Even though there were only eight of us, we got a lot done!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The students, in particular, showed great compassion and enthusiasm. \u201cWhat made it special for me was being able to really help the local people repair their own homes!\u201d student Felix reports proudly. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Experiencing the full range of emotions\u2014all in a single day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the mission, student Julian reacted with emotion: \u201cIt\u2019s shocking to see what it still looks like there. But at the same time, it was so great to see how many people came to help\u2014and we were able to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students of legal age experienced a wide range of emotions that day. Out of respect for the suffering of the residents, we will not disclose any personal details here, but for the students, it was a particularly moving moment to be able to share in the experience. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s completely different from watching it on TV,\u201d says student Jan. \u201cThat was really intense. But we helped as much as we could. And it was actually kind of fun, too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23340 size-featured_large\" src=\"https:\/\/steinmuehle.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/09\/0f1144ac-e4f5-4702-9dc1-9ee5283d8479-1440x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"630\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Experience Community in a Whole New Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the students involved were particularly moved by one feeling: a sense of community. Emilia, a student who just transferred to Steinm\u00fchle Boarding School this school year, was especially enthusiastic: \u201cIt was as if we\u2019d known each other for a long time. The solidarity and sense of community among the volunteers\u2014but also among us as a group\u2014were impressive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Everyone would come along again if there were another event<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project was organized by Nils Schwandt, the head of the Steinm\u00fchle boarding school. \u201cUnfortunately, only students of legal age were able to participate this time, so we were only able to provide support with eight students.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In total, just under 40 students and teachers from the Steinm\u00fchle boarding school volunteered to help.
