A little later, the “returning students” followed. That is, those who have already spent one or more years at the boarding school. Together with the teaching staff, they all now kick off the new school year. The 2018–19 school year begins.

Even the educators are always a little nervous on a day like this, but they’re well prepared. Their kickoff meeting began as early as Saturday, after a group breakfast.

Two new educators have joined the team

We welcomed our new colleagues, Isabel Schauss and Lena Tengler. While Isabel will take over as head of the main dormitory alongside boarding school director Nils Schwandt, Lena is the new head of the Biohaus. As the boarding school expands, the Biohaus is once again becoming a regular residential group for girls and boys in the lower and middle grades. There is now also an off-campus residential group at the Waldhaus. International students move there on weekends when there is no boarding school and during the fall and Easter breaks.

During its first meeting of the school year, the team also discussed the final plans for the coming weeks. The first topics on the agenda were the house trips during the first boarding school weekend (August 10–12) as well as organizational matters: duty schedules, transportation services, extracurricular activity planning, final house and room assignments, and welcome packages for the students.

A big moment: Saying goodbye to head to a new home

“I’m Jan. And who are you?” Jan Müller from the boarding school’s study center welcomes the new boarding student. There’s a distinct atmosphere on this warm, summery Sunday. One last time, they pick up their little sibling, exchange a few farewell words at the door with the grandmother who traveled with them. Some children still look around a bit shyly, while others head straight toward the teachers with beaming smiles. Memories of the trial stay come flooding back: Yes, it had been fun and it was cool. That’s why they chose Steinmühle Boarding School. And now—now the time has come to say goodbye to their parents later, after coffee.

While parents and students enjoy cake and fruit in the dining hall, boarding school director Nils Schwandt introduces the teaching staff at the same time. Bernd Holly from the school administration team also stops by. He lets the new Steinmühlen students know that teachers and school administrators always have an open ear and an open door whenever they need to talk or have questions. Then boarding school director Anke Muszynski lines up the newcomers “by house” for the photographer. Of course, parents also pull out their cell phones to capture a photo of their children together with their new group.

“See you in two weeks,” everyone calls out at the end, since that’s when their regular trip home is scheduled. Experience shows that “in two weeks” quickly turns into “already.” The enthusiasm with which the experienced boarding students arrive on campus in the hours that follow gives a hint of this: suitcases out of the car, a quick goodbye to their parents, high-fives with the staff. “Arrival” has two meanings here.

The first meeting in the evening

The first day back is always filled with excitement and anticipation, the joy of reuniting after six weeks of summer vacation, and curiosity. A new living group is formed; some students have completed their schooling and left the boarding school, while new ones have joined.

That evening, after dinner together, the first house meeting takes place right away. Getting to know one another, house outings the coming weekend, important information about the start of the school year, house rules, and boarding school regulations are all topics on the agenda. And so ends a day that many have been eagerly looking forward to.

The total number of students at Steinmühle Boarding School has risen significantly.
