Since then, Steinmühle has regularly supported the organization Haiticare and most recently donated 3,424.24 euros—funds raised through various fundraising activities organized by Class 9b.

The initiative was launched by a student from Marburg who, in January 2010, served as a first responder immediately after the earthquake in Haiti and approached Steinmühle School Principal Bernd Holly with a request for support. That very same day—following a lecture by the internationally renowned educator Jesper Juul at Steinmühle—Holly asked the numerous attendees for donations. And time and again since 2010, students at Steinmühle High School have volunteered to collect donations for Haiticare. This includes the current 9th-grade class, which raised awareness of the plight in Haiti through various activities and also set up an information booth in Marburg’s Oberstadt to solicit donations.

Class 9b, led by their homeroom teacher Dr. Rainer Nietzke, has been particularly active. The students didn’t just bake waffles and sell them for donations. Another major source of revenue was live music by the class band “Carrrla,” which played well-known pop songs.

HaitiCare is a small German aid organization run by volunteers, ensuring that 100 percent of donations actually reach the children in Haiti.
